CIS Rolls out Dallas Pilot Program

The USCIS is really starting to improve its customer service. On April 28, 2004 it announced that it will be conducting a pilot program at its Dallas district office which will benefit foreign nationals in the U.S. on visas such as F-1, H-1B, etc. who then marry a U.S. citizen. Foreign nationals in this situation generally submit two forms, the I-130 and I-485, to apply for permanent resident status.

After submitting these forms and supporting documents, the couple would have to wait for approximately one year before being called in for an interview. They would then have to wait for a few months more to receive the green card.

The Pilot program is going to change this dramatically.

Starting May 3, 2004 , couples may use the internet to schedule an appointment with the Dallas CIS office. On the day of their appointment, they may bring in their I-130 and I-485 forms with supporting documents and have a review of the applications on the spot. If the application is complete, an interview may be granted right then and there.  If the application is approved, the foreign national may then expect to receive his/her green card within 90 days of application.

This is a tremendous development because it saves the couple several months of anxious waiting. It also saves them money by not having to apply for a work permit or travel documents. Kudos to the CIS for this streamlined processing. Those living within the jurisdiction of the Dallas CIS office are fortunate. The rest of the nation eagerly awaits a nation-wide rollout.
