Getting a SSN for your Foreign Fiance(e)

9/26/03: The Social Security Administration recently revised their process for issuing Social Security Numbers for valid nonwork reasons.

The Social Security Administration clarified rules regarding when they would assign an SSN to an alien not under authority of law permitting him or her to work in the U.S. This particular circumstance may apply to K-1 foreign fiance(e)s who just arrived into the US and did not receive temporary work authorization upon their arrival. U.S. citizens often want their fiance(e)s to receive a Social Security number immediately and but are rejected when they bring their loved ones into the local SSA office.

The SSA stated that they are now defining  ``valid nonwork purpose'' as those instances when a Federal statute or regulation requires an alien to have an SSN in order to receive a federally-funded benefit to which the alien has otherwise established entitlement, or when a State or local law requires an alien who is legally in the U.S. to have an SSN in order to receive general public assistance benefits to which the alien has otherwise established entitlement.
